| Choffy - The New Postum? |

Over a year ago I was deeply saddened when I learned that General Mills was ceasing production of Postum. I'm not a coffee drinker, but it was tradition in my childhood home to drink Postum during the winter. I always enjoyed it as a child and kept the tradition alive as an adult. I've had Pero, but always preferred the taste of Postum, probably just because of the family tradition. I haven't been satisfied with my choices of a replacement until now. We're happy to introduce Choffy to our store. Choffy is brewed chocolate. Simply roasted, ground cacao beans that are brewed like fresh coffee. While the taste is nothing like Postum, the experience of sipping brewed chocolate is delightful. With 0 grams of fat and 20 calories, it might be a great substitute for Postum. Recently we held a "taste off" at our home, taste-testing different methods of brewing Choffy. It can be brewed with a French press, a drip coffee maker or an espresso machine. We don't have access to an espresso machine, so we used a French press and a drip coffee maker. Both brews were good, but there were substiantial differences between the two. The drip machine produced a light brew in comparison to the French press. The brew from the French press was much darker and richer, with more oil from the beans than the drip machine. However, the French press made a brew that was much more bitter than that of the drip machine. This comes about because the grounds are in contact with the water much longer in the French press than they are in the drip machine. Being more bitter isn't necessarily a bad thing. It may indicate that the brew could contain higher levels of flavonols. Flavonols are a class of antioxidants that are found abundantly in cacao. You may want to use some additional sweetener with Choffy brewed in a French press. If you enjoyed Postum, you might want to experiment using blackstrap molasses as a sweetener. |
